Power is back on at the church! See you all for worship this morning!

While power currently remains out at the church, all services will take place tomorrow morning whether power is restored or not. If power is not restored, the elevator will be unavailable for use, but handicap accessibility is available via the ramps on the south end of the church. In that event, we will simply all sit close and listen in as in days of old! Power is still on in the Churchgrove and at the school, so Connect will go on as normal.

No 6:30 PM worship service tonight due to the severe storms and power outage at church. Stay safe.

“When Peace, Like a River” - LSB 763

THROWBACK THURSDAY Henry David Thoreau once said, “A name pronounced is the recognition of the individual to whom it belongs….” Thoreau would undoubtedly be challenged to pronounce, let alone recognize, many early St. Lorenz names. The 1891 wedding certificate of Johann Georg and Wilhelmine Louisa, conducted by Rev. Ludwig Fuerbringer, is an example. Pronounce these common mid-to-late 1800’s Frankenmuth names (maybe one of them is yours!). Men were Andreas, Armin, Balderman, Balthas, Caspar, Ernst, Johann (most common then), Lorenz, Ludwig, Melchoir, Sylbert, Theophil, and Wolfgang. Ladies were Bertha, Friederike, Gertraud, Glenora, Hedwig, Hulda, Irma, Isidor, Kuni, Lovira, Mathilda, Meta, and Trilde. While this list is inexhaustive (spellings can vary, too), it certainly recognizes our German heritage!

It's that time of year again! Adam and Morgan Wolfe's vicarage among us is drawing to an end, and they will be moving back to St. Louis next week. They will be loading their moving truck on Monday at 9:30 AM, and your help would be much appreciated. Come join us in sending the Wolfes off with our thanks and well wishes.

THROWBACK THURSDAY Weddings, Part II “…Something new, something borrowed, something old, something…black?” When looking at 19th century weddings, many women wore black dresses. Most weddings in the mid-1800’s were not photographed (the first photographic idea was invented in 1839), yet by the late 1800’s, wedding pics were taken (seen below is Mr. and Mrs. Michael Weiss). The bride’s dress, though, was often worn well after the wedding, usually considered her best dress for future, special occasions. Yet the first known wedding in Frankenmuth, for which a dark dress was undoubtedly worn, was held on June 12 or 27, 1847, of John Michael Hemmeter and Anna B. M. Leidlein (that is another Throwback!). By the turn of the century, white dresses were soon worn as a symbol of purity. So go ahead, remember your wedding. It’s something to Throwback to!

Lord, keep this nation under Your divine care. Bless the leaders of our land that we may be a people of peace among ourselves and a blessing to other nations of the earth. Help us to elect trustworthy officials, contribute to wise decisions for the general welfare of all, and thus serve You faithfully in our generation to the honor of Your holy name; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord. Amen.

THROWBACK THURSDAY It’s been said that every firework begins with one spark. 75 years ago, the Lutheran Witness documented the Franconian colonies’ first spark, as well as 100 years of worshiping Christ! Local leaders convened at Arthur Hill High School. Responsible was Pastor Emil H. Voss who stated, “It seems to us these Saxons are getting too much credit in the founding of the Missouri Synod. The Bavarians should get their share, too.” The pastors seen below (Rev. Schoenow, Richville; Rev. Mayer, ‘Muth; Rev. Miller, ‘Trost; Rev. Nuechterlein, ‘Lust; and Rev. Klammer, ‘Muth) headed the Centennial celebration. Meanwhile at St. Lorenz, our church communicant roll was 1,823, with 1,100 attending the German service and 350 the English. Two-thirds of members were farmers, and the school enrollment was 354. From 100 to 175 years, our fireworks show continues to amaze!

Vicar Wolfe agreed to have his head shaved if our VBS families gave more than $1,500 in offerings this week. We are happy to report that they generously gave over $2,000 for the work being done down at Franklin Ave Mission in Flint. Praise God, and enjoy watching along with our students and parents!

This morning our school students have the opportunity to tour our St. Lorenz Worship and Event Center!

Our St. Lorenz Jr. High Band is playing their annual concert at the River Place right now!
